Chicano/a Studies 098-syllabus

Required Participation:

During each class session throughout the entire semester you must bring with you to class a copy of that particular day's issue of the Los Angeles Times. You must also bring the required DICTIONARY to each class session.

 

Course Description:

ChS 098 is an intensive course of basic reading and writing skills which has been designed for students whose English Placement Test score indicates a need for improved reading and writing skills. Students will learn how to: Develop paragraphs, build an extensive vocabulary, and the development of a portfolio of essays.

 

Course Objectives:

The objectives of this course are to expand student reading and writing skills through the practice of regular readings from required texts, written assignments, and class discussions. The emphasis of the course is to improve and develop writing skills necessary to succeed in college courses.

Additional Reading Materials:

Additional reading materials and assignments will be presented in class.

 

Participation:

Students are responsible for reading all assigned materials.

Students are responsible for being present during examinations.

Students are responsible for submitting assignments on due date.

Each student is required to participate fully in class activities.

Students are required to attend all class sessions from starting time to dismissal time.

No sleeping in class!

Any student who fails to remain awake during class will be listed as absent for that particular session.

No eating in class at any time.

You may drink water and beverages.

During class time, you may not conduct communication using any electronic devices (including text-pagers and digital phones). You will be asked to leave the classroom if you insist on continuing in this activity which will then result in you be listed as absent.

At all times during class, you may NOT wear earphones similar to those used for listening to music nor those used for mobile phone conversations.

Should the instructor not be present in class, DO NOT LEAVE any completed assignments/tests in the classroom when leaving.

Only 3 absences are allowed during the semester.

Students should NOT leave the class while it is in session for any extended period of time without permission from the instructor.

Students may not violate CSUN code of conduct.

Students who are absent from more than 3 class sessions during the semester will not receive a passsing grade of Credit.

NO OPPORTUNITY FOR MAKE-UP WORK WILL BE ALLOWED OR ACCEPTED.

 

Grading:

This course is available only on a Credit/No Credit class, a minimum grade of passing (which is a "C") is required. Grading in this course will be based on points.

Essays (6) 120 points

Participation 129 points

Final 251 points

Total 500 points

 

450-500 points is an A;

400-449 points is a B;

350-399 points is a C.

ANYONE BELOW 350 POINTS WILL NOT PASS THE COURSE.

 

CSUN NOTICE:

First-time freshman are required to complete all developmental writing and math with the first year of enrollment. The University's "Basic Subjects" policy further requires that as soon as any needed developmental courses are completed, students must enroll in the General Education Basic Subjects (Section A) classes in writing, critical reasoning, oral communication and math. Enrollment must be continuous until Section A is completed.
